Super Extra Grande

Super Extra Grande is about a veterinarian who specializes in giant animals–y’know, offworld creatures far bigger than the boring dinosaurs of Earth. Working something like a noir detective, the protagonist is eventually tasked with finding out where his two former assistant’s disappeared to. This has a taste of a space opera without the girth, but the world is so dense and delightfully odd I wish there was more to it. At 160-ish pages, it’s right in classic pulp territory, and while I finished it in a couple of days, I’ve been thinking about it for weeks afterward. The Spanglish used throughout is a particularly nice touch. It is extremely rare that I ask for more from this type of book, but I really want it here. It feels like a short, opening section to a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy-esque universe that I’m dying to know more about.
